Baines’ Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

An exceptionally romantic retreat in the heart of one of Botswana’s private concessions, Sanctuary Baines’ Camp is known for its unique “Living with Elephants” experience.

Accommodations at the camp consist of five luxury suites built on raised platforms overlook the Boro River, home to a pod of hippos. Plush, four-poster beds can be wheeled onto a private deck to enjoy a brilliant night under the untouched glory of an African night sky. Each room has an en suite bathroom and the added treat of a personal star bath. Inside, traditional safari ceiling fans keep the rooms nice and cool at all times. Other amenities include a safe, hair dryer, robe, mini bar, lounge area, and complimentary wi-fi.

The camp is located on a vast private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana’s Okavango Delta. Named after the 19th century explorer and painter Thomas Baines, it is the Sanctuary’s smallest camp providing an intimate view of the world famous, Okavango, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are plenty of big cats in the area including plenty of lions. But their cousins the leopards and cheetahs can be spotted around the camp too. Other wildlife in the Concession include spotted hyaena, large herds of buffalo, elephant, white rhino, giraffe, blue wildebeest, and Burchell’s zebra. Birdlife is prolific with African jacana, pygmy-geese, goliath heron, and migrant waders in summer being particularly common.

Game drives led by experienced guides in 4×4 vehicles allow guests to encounter the vast array of wildlife. The day and evening game drives visit a variety of ecosystems, from deserts and savannas to lagoons and swamps. However, the highlight of any visit to Baines’ Camp is the “Living with Elephants” experience, a chance to interact with a trio of orphaned elephants adopted by Doug and Sandi Groves. The three semi-habituated elephants named Jabu, Thembi, and Morula “lead” guests on long walks as they forage for food, take showers in the lagoon, and explore the Okavango Delta. In addition, the camp offers other unique ways to explore the region, including walking safaris, mokoro (native dugout canoe), motorized boat excursions, and scenic helicopter flights.

Nestled in a grove of trees and surrounded by papyrus beds, the camp features a refreshing pool and expansive elevated viewing deck providing ideal places to view the wildlife in the lagoon below. Full English and continental breakfasts are served on the morning game drive, and a daily highlight is the elegant high tea served in the afternoon. An eco-friendly property, the camp was constructed using only commercially grown wood, with over 150,000 recycled aluminum cans used within the walls to provide insulation.
