Kalahari Plains Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Kalahari Plains Camp is nestled into a remote part of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and overlooks an expansive savanna that teems with life throughout the year.

Built on raised platforms, Kalahari Plains Camp’s is comprised of eight en-suite resident tents for up to sixteen guests. There are seven twin-bedded luxury canvas tented rooms each with two three quarter beds. In addition to which, the camp has one family tent with two bedrooms that each come with their own bathroom and entrance while sharing a deck. Of course, the camp’s best feature is that each tent includes its own sleep-out area, perfect for gazing at the star-studded African skies. The camp is powered completely by the Kalahari sun, and insulated canvas walls create comfortable interior temperatures even in the heat of the day.

The camp is ideally situated in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the second largest protected wildlife reserve on earth, in the heart of central Botswana. Not truly a desert, the summer rains cause the semi-arid Kalahari to explode with life. In fact, the savanna grows a covering of lush grasses and wildflowers, and herds of grazing mammals descend into the basin to feed. This area is home to the legendary black-maned Kalahari lion, the lively honey badger, and vast herds of antelope, as well as some of the highest concentrations of cheetah in Africa.

The camp’s primary activity is their twice daily or full-day 4×4 game drives across the grasslands. Though wildlife is viewable from the camp itself, expertly guided drives aim for animal hotspots where the density and activity are at their peak. For a more intimate exploration of the desert, guided bush walks are led by staff members from the neighboring San Bushmen clans who share their tracking skills and knowledge of the land and animals. The camp’s star beds are the perfect spot to sleep under an expanse of starry sky while the animals sing a wild lullaby. Many of the guides dabble in astronomy and can point out the constellations above.

The main camp is raised off the ground on wooden platforms to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping, spacious views across the Kalahari. A common lounge and dining areas provide an excellent vantage point to relax and enjoy the beauty of the land. A refreshing dip in the swimming pool can wash off the dust of a game drive before pre-dinner drinks.
