Gunns Camp

Gunns Camp

Situated in the heart of Botswana’s iconic Okavango Delta, Gunns Camp overlooks legendary Chief’s Island and borders the Moremi Game Reserve. Gunns is regarded by many as one of the few remaining luxury, vintage safari camps. With the delta spreading out in every direction, the camp nestles in the shade of palm and ebony trees.

The Okavango Delta is born out of two rivers that emerge from the Angola highlands and converge to form the Okavango River. Each year approximately 10 million cubic meters of water floods 5,800 square miles of the Kalahari, forming the largest inland delta in the world. It is this unique contrast between wetland and desert that makes the region unique, together with its astonishing variety of plants, amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Chief's Island in particular is large enough to host lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, elusive wild dog, and a variety of plains game from zebra to red lechwe.

Accommodation at Gunn's Camp consists of six deluxe Kenya-style tents. En-suite bathrooms have bathtubs as well as and outdoor showers that are entirely private. In addition to the tents, an elevated thatched honeymoon suite offers even greater luxury. All tents have lighting provided by generated electricity. Towels and a laundry service are included in your stay. The tents have either twin or double beds and are on raised platforms that afford excellent views across the surrounding delta. Each tent’s lounge and veranda have been furnished with and a pleasant mix of traditional African furniture.

The lodging area is linked to the main camp by a raised wooden walkway that traverses the wetlands. At night, lanterns light the walkway and create a warm, romantic ambience. In the main area are an elevated bar, lounge, and dining room as well as a campfire boma and a swimming pool.

Depending on the day’s activities, your day will begin with either a light or fully-cooked breakfast. Lunch and afternoon tea are served at the camp, and dinner will either be a three-course meal in the dining room or a barbeque around the campfire.

Activities at Gunns Camp center around exploring and enjoying the region’s remarkable terrain. Mokoro excursions allow guests to cruise among the reeds and navigate delta channels in a traditional dug-out canoe, providing a unique perspective on the environment and an exciting way to encounter its wildlife. Guided bush walks provide similarly unique encounters.

More adventurous guests will want to take advantage of camping excursions. Gunns will provide basic camping equipment and food so that you can set out with a personal guide to find an island where you will set up camp. For relaxtion, try a sunset cruise in a motor boat.
