Khwai River Lodge

Khwai River Lodge

Overlooking Botswana’s Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of the iconic Okavango Delta, Khwai River Lodge is one of the oldest safari lodges in the country. It was established in the 1960s by the late Sir Seretse Khama, the first president of an independent Botswana. The lodge has a wonderful grove of old indigenous Leadwood and fig trees and boasts excellent views of Khwai River floodplain.

Moremi Game Reserve was the first wildlife area to be set aside by tribal people. It was established in 1963 by the Batawana Tribal Administration and was later renamed after Chief Letsholathebe Moremi, who had campaigned to safeguard this region. The reserve encompasses 1,900 square miles and is widely hailed as the predator capital of the world. And what draws these predators (including the resident packs of wild dog and hyena) are the abundant plains game.

Accommodation at Khwai River Lodge is in fifteen twin-bedded en-suite luxury tents that have thatched roofs and lavishly appointed bathrooms and dressing areas. The tents are on raised timber platforms that afford amazing views of the surrounding terrain. The large decks have hammocks and easy chairs, making for both great game viewing and relaxations. The tent interiors are luxurious and offer a mini bar, a four poster bed complete with mosquito netting, and air conditioning.

In addition to the tents, a private suite set apart from the other tents has a few special touches, such as an open-air shower and a beautiful copper-framed Victorian bath with only the trees above. Guests who reserve the private suite also have at their disposal an exclusive vehicle and personal guide, who will tailor safaris to their preference.

The lodge’s common area includes a spectacular observation deck overlooking the Khwai River and the Moremi Game Reserve beyond. A high-powered telescope spots game in the day and planets at night. The boma (or “place of eating”) hosts dinners and local performances under the stars. The elevated deck not only provides spectacular views but is also a prime location for enjoying an intimate dinner.

Meals at Khwai River Lodge are customized to the day’s activities. Whether you go on early morning game drives or sleep in, there will be no lack of delicious eats. You will either have a leisurely breakfast on site or enjoy brunch after returning from the morning safari. Afternoon tea is served before the afternoon game drive. Sundowners and snacks are offered while out in the bush in the afternoon and evening. And dinner usually happens after dark, either around the campfire or on the deck.

Activities at Khwai Lodge revolve around the region’s uniquely spectacular terrain and wildlife. Game drives into the Moremi Game Reserve are the daily staple. The permanent water of the Khwai River makes it a hotspot for birdwatchers. The area is most famous for its raptor populations which include Martial eagles, secretary birds, bateleurs, and a whole host of smaller raptors. Many water bird species thrive here as well such as purple gallinule, saddle-billed stork, black stork, and kingfishers.

And an on-site spa is the perfect contrast and compliment to a day of adventure in the bush.
