Mashatu Game Reserve

Mashatu Game Reserve

The Mashatu Game Reserve epitomizes the vast and untamed nature of the African savanna. This untainted wilderness in eastern Botswana takes its name from a local tree and is nicknamed “Land of the Giants” because of the plentiful elephant (the world’s largest land animal), giraffe (the world’s tallest animal), eland (the world’s largest antelope), ostrich (the world’s largest bird), and kori bustard (the world’s largest flying bird) that call this region home.

At the confluence of this Limpopo and Shashe Rivers the topography ranges from sandstone outcrops to savanna to riverine forest to marshlands. The diverse landscape and plentiful water supports an incredible diversity and concentration of wildlife. Most prized of course are lion, leopard, cheetah, and elephant. But the region hosts a delightful variety of rarer wildlife, from aardwolf to African wild cat to black-backed jackal, not to mention the great herds of antelope and other plains game. Additionally, conservationists have recently reintroduced endangered wild dogs. The rivers are to blame for the almost 400 bird species that live or migrate through Mashatu.
