Pelo Camp

Pelo Camp

On a heart-shaped island in the middle Botswana’s Okavango Delta, Pelo Camp (meaning “heart” in the local language) is aptly named and a true adventurer’s safari destination. With eco-friendly design and no permanent structures, Pelo Camp offers a wetlands delta experience in the private Jao Concession on the boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve. Deep in the delta, the small island is surrounded by permanent water, opening numerous explorations into the wetlands and floodplains by mokoro, a traditional dug-out canoe.

Nestled among massive wild date palms, jackalberry, and Natal mahogany trees, Pelo Camp’s main area features a tented dining area and lounge. Enjoy an additional raised platform area and outdoor boma, perfect for relaxing under the starry African sky.

Five spacious guest tents offer classic safari accommodation with a touch of luxury. A covered front veranda and en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and running water add to the simple amenities, and a traditional outdoor bucket shower is sure to provide a memorable camp experience.

Offering something different than the typical game drives by safari vehicle, Pelo Camp welcomes you to explore the wonders of the delta in a quieter, more intimate fashion. Water-based game viewing in six two-seater mokoros provide opportunities to embrace authentic Africa.

One of the best areas to see sitatunga and red lechwe, the camp is also surrounded by wildlife concentrations that change with the water flow from season to season. Occasional lion, cheetah, and leopard are spotted. Throughout the year, sightings of hippo, crocodile, tsessebe, elephant, wildebeest, and zebra are common. Flourishing birdlife is always exciting and features species such as Pel’s fishing owl, African and lesser jacanas, slaty egret, African pygmy goose, and western banded snake-eagle.

Other activities offered at Pelo Camp include boating excursions in the waterways surrounding the camp in a twelve-seater boat. Exploring surrounding islands and seasonal fishing (catch and release encouraged) are other enjoyable pastimes relished by guests of Pelo Camp.
