San Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Sitting on the edge of the vast and enigmatic Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in the harsh Kalahari Desert, San Camp offers world-class luxury amidst the starkest of environments.

Accommodations at the camp consist of six white canvas tents standing on the shore of a salt pan. The romantic Moroccan style tents each come with an en suite bathroom with bucket showers and flush toilets. The four poster beds are draped in mosquito netting. Paraffin lights illuminate the night in place of electricity. San Camp along with its sister camp, Jack’s Camp are the only two permanent structures here in the Kalahari.

The camp is ideally located in a private concession adjacent to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans with rolling grasslands dotted by desert palms in one direction and in the other the dead-level and never-ending expanse of the saltpans. During the annual wet season, one of the world’s great migrations brings an astonishing number of plains game to the Kalahari. As the summer rains create lakes and lush grasslands, great herds of wildebeest and zebra are drawn to the region, not to mention the birdlife. And where these herbivores are, the carnivores are never far behind. But perhaps most uniquely, San Camp is an excellent base camp for exploration of the mysterious saltpans.

The camp has a host of exciting activities to choose from. Game drives are conducted by expert guides and are the perfect way to explore this unique desert wilderness and wildlife including sightings of the region’s unique concentration of wildlife, such as gemsbuck, brown hyena, aardvark, zebra, and flamingo. There is an exciting quad bike excursion through the salt pans. Walking safaris let guests commune with the camp’s friendly meerkat colony. In addition, there are cultural tours with a group of Zu/’hoasi Bushmen as they share their ancient culture. Horse safaris explore the pans the same way the missionaries and explorers did. There is even a visit to Seven Sisters, Chapman’s Baobab which is one of the three largest and oldest trees in Africa.

The main camp includes a magnificent mess tent with a small natural history museum and library. There is also a tea tent spread with cushions in the Moroccan style for a relaxing afternoon refreshment. A yoga pavilion is available too. The camp is known for its delectable food and fresh and original meals. An environmentally friendly property, it runs on almost one hundred percent solar power.
