Stanley’s Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Nestled in a grove of ebony and sausage trees within the Okavango Delta, Sanctuary Stanley’s Camp is a luxury safari camp with the unique “living with elephants” experience.

Accommodations consist of eight classic safari tents that have been individually designed to provide a restful end to an exciting day on safari. African antiques combined with elegantly traditional décor are reminiscent of the British colonial era. Each tent includes an en suite bathroom with a shower, sinks, and flush toilet. An expansive private viewing deck boasts a hammock, daybed, and area for an intimate dinner, if desired.

Stanley’s Camp is located on a 260,000-acre private concession in the world-famous Okavango Delta. It also borders the game-rich Moremi Game Reserve. The Delta changes with the seasons from a lush wetland when the waters flow from the Okavango River over the Angolan hills to dry savannahs as the harsh Kalahari Desert absorbs the moisture. Many animals live here from over 450 bird species to plenty of plains game including tessebe, antelope, zebra, giraffe, and the rarer sitangua. Of course, there are plenty of predators from lions to leopards to hyena and wild African dogs. The area is well-known for its abundance of buffalo with herds often exceeding 2,000.

Adventure-filled game drives led by experienced guides in 4×4 vehicles allow guests to get close to the vast array of wildlife that the Okavango Delta has to offer. Water crossings are part of the journey, and game drives are often combined with motorized boating excursions. Mokoro rides in traditional dugout canoes steered by long poles introduce safari-goers and animals to each other in a gentle, quiet way. Crocodile, hippo, buffalo, fish, eagles, frogs, and beautiful lilies are just some of the incredible sights enjoyed on the river. Walking safaris take an intimate look at the savannas and lagoon and a chance to see smaller flora and fauna missed from the vehicles vantage point. However, the star attraction at the camp is the unique “living with elephants” experience. Three orphaned elephants have been adopted by Doug and Sandy Groves and take guests on long walks.

The main lodge houses a large tented lounge and dining area with magnificent views over the floodplain in front of the camp. There is also a bar, library, and curio shop. The camp’s refreshing rim flow swimming pool is the ideal spot to cool off and observe giraffes and other plain’s game walking across the savanna. Afternoon tea includes a delicious selection of warm scones, quiche’s, biscuits, and refreshing drinks. Delicious three-course dinners are enjoyed inside the dining room or under the stars.
