Xudum

Xudum

Xudum Okavango Delta Camp is set within a 62,000-acre exclusive wildlife concession southeast of the Moremi Game Reserve in the heart of one of the world’s most unique locales, the Okavango Delta. The Okavango River is born of two rivers that meander down from the Angolan highlands more than 600 miles away. The river disappears beneath the sands of the Kalahari, creating a lush inland delta in the midst of this otherwise arid country. Some parts of the delta remain permanently flooded while its outer reaches experience high water levels only from May to September.

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. The waterways are lush and perfect for exquisite small creatures and rare birds (like Pel’s Fishing Owl). Guests can see many species of animal here. Elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, and elusive leopard all reside in the delta. Apart from Africa's “big five,” cheetah and African wild dog may also be spotted. Dainty sitatunga and red lechwe antelope have adapted to walk on the floating reed beds.

Xudum is located on the channels and lagoons of the southern seasonal part of the delta and is surrounded by a mosaic of papyrus and reed beds. This is a destination intended for discerning travelers who are looking for an exclusive experience, attention to detail and indulgence. Xudum encompasses nine creatively designed living spaces, all split-level and all overlooking the lagoon. Private rooftop hideouts yield superb views of this watery wilderness and the hippo below. The suites are luxuriously appointed and feature private plunge pools and an upper deck on which to dine or take in the extraordinary views. The suites are intended to blur the boundaries between inside and outside. Taking a bubble bath takes on a whole new meaning with these views!

The central guest areas are inviting, with large sofas and interesting décor. Open decks and living spaces enhance the beautiful views. Special meals by the light of many lanterns are held out in the open so guests can fully appreciate the night sounds and clear skies.

Game drives depart at advantageous times of the day and always, when guests return, there are delicious meals and teas to be enjoyed. Twice daily game drives in an open air 4x4 safari vehicle are accompanied by an armed guide and tracker. Game drives track the big five but are sure to encounter a wide variety of other animals. Bush walks are perhaps the most authentic way to experience the Okavango. An armed guide leads the way and imparts knowledge about the local flora and fauna.

River cruises in an electrically powered “eco-boat” or a mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) explore the network of channels, waterways fringed by dense reeds and papyrus. Fishing expeditions can be arranged during the fishing season.
