Journeys with Insight

One-of-a-kind horseback riding safaris are the leading trademark of Deloraine, the headquarters for the mobile riding safari operation of Offbeat Safaris. The owners live on site, surrounded by 3,500 acres of farmland, and share the expansive colonial lodge with many guests each year, including the occasional visit by British royals.

Deloraine’s beginnings go back to 1920 when a prominent early settler-turned-politician named Lord Francis Scott built Deloraine. Updated but still reminiscent of an elegant, refined era, the lodge boasts three large upstairs bedrooms and two downstairs bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Large drawing room, dining room, and expansive two-story veranda contribute to the comfortable, family atmosphere. In addition, a nearby cottage caters to guests looking for more privacy, and offers three bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms.

Rooms and verandas overlook the well-manicured lawns and formal gardens. Croquet lawn, tennis court, and swimming pool provide places for recreation, relaxation, and rejuvenation.

Deloraine’s location on the western edge of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley provides almost unlimited opportunities for adventure. Nearby Mt. Londiani, an extinct volcano with a bamboo-shrouded crater, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Lake Bogoria are home to various unique animal populations of flamingo, greater kudu, and rhino.

Horseback safaris are the most popular activity at Deloraine due to the owners’ commitment to provide an exceptional riding safari experience. An active breeding program produces mounts that are responsive, tough, and fit. Passionate horseman serve as guides, and Offbeat Safaris has an excellent reputation for providing an experience that is “exhilarating, comfortable, and most importantly, safe and fun.” Wildlife abounds, and guests report frequent sightings of zebra, lion, elephant, rhino, and more.

For those less comfortable with long riding safaris, Deloraine offers rides around the farm and surrounding mountains. A forest ride to search for the black and white colobus monkey is a thrilling adventure and provides unforgettable memories. The full-sized, on-site polo ground is ideal for guests wishing to play polo with Deloraine’s polo ponies which are some of Kenya’s finest.
