Meru Camp

Meru Camp

If getting off the beaten track in some of Africa’s most remote wilderness is what you want in a safari, then Offbeat Meru Camp is the ideal choice. The camp is exclusive, traditional, and perfectly located in the Bisanadi Nature Reserve on the edge of Kenya’s Meru National Park. Although the park’s wildlife suffered from decades of poaching at the end of the last century, many animals now thrive, including Africa’s “Big 5”: rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion, and leopard.

Six spacious tents nestle in the forest overlooking the Bisanadi River. Each of these hideaways features a large iron bed, mosquito netting, classic neutral décor, and en-suite bathroom. Although most of the camp is lit with traditional “tilly” lamps, lighting in the tents is provided through environmentally responsible solar energy.

The main camp area offers a living room tent with comfortable seating, writing area, and bar. Guests enjoy chef-prepared meals and informal dining in the mess tent or around the campfire. After an exciting day of game drives, the infinity swimming pool refreshes guests and offers a relaxing opportunity to unwind.

The thirteen rivers that flow through Meru National Park as well as their accompanying forests provide nesting areas for a stunning diversity of birdlife. Lion prides flourish, some of which are likely descendants of Elsa, a lioness made famous by Joy Adamson’s book Born Free. In addition to the frequent sightings of elephant and buffalo herds, the area is home to almost seventy black and white rhino that have been reintroduced to the park. Other wildlife sightings feature giraffe, oryx, gerenuk, and lesser kudu.

Experienced Maasai guides lead twice-daily wildlife drives that are tailored to suit the guests’ interests. Other activities include bush breakfasts, sundowners, evening wildlife walks with armed guards, fishing excursions, and cultural visits to the local Boran community.

Offbeat Safaris provides an exceptional safari experience based on four founding principles: charismatic guides, a passion and respect for Africa’s wildlife, high standards of comfort and service, and exclusive (fourteen or fewer guests) lodges and camps. Offbeat Meru Camp truly meets or exceeds these high expectations as well as the the expectations of discerning travelers.
