Journeys with Insight

It is an almost impossible task to begin to fully tell the story of Segera Ranch. But do not let the bare facts of animal diversity, habitat, and numbers dull your senses. The word “unique” is more than applicable here, since you can choose to be more than a mere observer. Where else would you be able to contribute to reforestation efforts by planting indigenous trees in the Wangari Maathi Memorial Forest at the Zeitz Foundation Headquarters? Or take part in the daily tracking and monitoring activities of the endangered patas monkey or Grevy’s zebra? Or learn more about the symbiotic relationships between different species by plucking a pod of the acacia thorn bush?

Segera Ranch is a Wilderness Collection destination in the Laikipia Plateau in Kenya. It is committed to the “4Cs”: Commerce, Conservation, Community, and Culture. The “4Cs” has at its core the aim to create a responsible self-sustaining model for preserving a part of Kenya’s natural heritage, being of benefit to the local population who are an integral part of the program, enhancing responsible tourism, and promoting sustainable land-use and awareness of conservation issues.

Laikipia Plateau is a conservancy area of 3,600 square miles and a major part of the Ewaso Ecosystem that has the majestic snow-clad Mount Kenya as a backdrop. With the second highest wildlife density in Kenya and the only area where both habitat and wildlife numbers are on the increase, the Laikipia Plateau conservancy is a unique and exciting safari destination.

Segera Ranch is worth visiting not only because of its extraordinary animal diversity, but also because of the sheer numbers and the global importance of the species represented here. Certainly the Africa’s “Big 5” are here—lion (several prides), leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino. But the area is also home to cheetah, herds of innumerable plains game, many reptile species, and more than 150 bird species.

However, the reasons for the international importance of the Ewaso Ecosystem are the facts that it is home to 7,000 elephant (Kenya’s second largest herd) and it supports important populations of endangered species, including black rhino, around 2,000 Grevy’s zebra (70% of the world’s population), reticulated giraffe, Kenya’s only viable populations of the endangered Patas Monkey and Lelwel’s Hartebeest, and one of the few expanding populations of African Wild Dog.

Conservationists in Africa face the seemingly impossible task of integrating the needs of Africa’s indigenous human populations with its indigenous wildlife populations and habitat. Segera, and much of Laikipia, have a long and unique history of successfully integrating livestock and wildlife management activities.

Visitors to Segera Ranch will be charmed by the surrounding savanna, the profusion of botanical life in the sculpture garden, the exceptional African Art Collection, and the delicious home-grown cuisine either in Paddock House, the Stables, and pool bar area. Other amenities include an entrance pavilion with fireplace, a shop, an art gallery, a gym, a wellness center with a double spa treatment room, a mobile massage bed for private in-villa massages, rasul tower with steam bath, salt-water swimming pool, and a wine tower with the owner’s private selection.

The ranch offers a variety of accommodation options, sure to please whether your top priority is budget or luxury. Five villas are raised on wooden decks and have one bedroom, en-suite bathroom, and outside deck. Under each Villa is an outside lounge and comfortable swing-bed. One family villa comprises one double and one twin room, each with en-suite bathroom, and a shared lounge and deck area. Under the villa is an outside lounge and two comfortable swing-beds.
