Azura Benguerra

Azura Benguerra

The Azura Retreat on Benguerra Island in the Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago is a nearly indescribable destination. Adjectives of the known languages are inadequate. Picture an island paradise within a marine national park. Impossibly white sandy beaches as far as the eye can see, contrasting with the glistening turquoise of a watery expanse. The wonderfully warm waters of the Indian Ocean peppered with intimate tropical isles.

The villas at Azura Benguerra are hand-built and blend chic modern décor with the best of Mozambican style. They offer the best of what one would expect from a luxury boutique resort. Locally-sourced wooden beams and traditional artwork beneath a thatched jekka roof are an homage to the region’s history.

Azura Benguerra has three luxury beach villas, each mere steps from the beach. With one hundred square meters under roof and a total of 450 square meters of private space, the villas offer spacious luxury. Each villa offers a private plunge pool, air-conditioning, a king size bed with oversize mosquito net, Egyptian cotton percale bed linens, an en-suite bathroom with shower as well as outdoor his and hers showers, and Mozambican host service.

Eleven “infinity” beach villas are furnished in contemporary style and look out over a stunning infinity pool toward the beach and the sea beyond. These villas are larger than the “luxury” beach villas and offer the same excellent facilities. The newest addition is “Villa Amizade,” a two-bedroom villa located at the western end of the property. This luxurious villa sleeps up to four people and offers all the amenities of the other villas plus much more. It is perfect for families or a couple requiring more of a private residence feel.

As one would expect, the Presidential Villa is one of the most luxurious private residences found anywhere in the Indian Ocean. It encompasses an area of 425 square meters under roof, with total private area of nearly 1,100 square meters. Its exclusive beachfront location offers amazing views towards Bazaruto Dune. The huge split-level master suite has a king size bed, sitting area, massive bathroom with panoramic free-form bath and shower, dressing area, and his and hers indoor/outdoor showers.

Activities at Azura Benguerra center around enjoying the Indian Ocean. Snorkeling, diving, fly-fishing, or big game fishing are all ways to encounter the ocean’s incredible bounty, from the swimming amongst the incredible variety of reef fish to angling for marlin, sailfish, tuna, and giant trevally. There is also opportunity to swim with dolphin and track migrating humpback whale. The resort’s Padi 5-star dive center has all new Scubapro equipment and a full range of instructional courses from discover scuba upwards.

Guests enjoy sunset dhow cruises, bird watching on the island, picnics on the beach (possibly at Pansy Island), and day trips to Vilanculos. The Spa at Azura offers signature treatments based on local ingredients and traditions—a massage with ground coconut shells, natural spices, and warm marula oil or head-to-toe skin treatments with tamarind and aloe.

Dining at Azura is remarkable in its own right, given the pristine seas and the selection and quality of seafood they yield. The seven-course tasting menu is a particular highlight. The restaurant has magnificent uninterrupted views of the beach. The Gheko Deck offers informal dining with your feet in the sand. And the Star Bar offers fresh sushi, rolled with the catch of the day. The resort’s extensive wine cellar includes fine wines from the owner's chateau in the Loire Valley.
