Azura Quilalea

Azura Quilalea

Azura Quilalea is a little bit of paradise in the warm Indian Ocean off the coast of Mozambique. Located on Quilalea Private Island in the forgotten sanctuary that is the Quirimbas Archipelago, it offers complete exclusivity and unparalleled natural beauty. The photographs just cannot do it justice; its colors are impossibly vivid. White clouds, aquamarine seas, sandy beaches all take on a crisper, fresher hue here, as if God mixed a unique palette just for these islands. Quilalea Island is wholly uninhabited except for guests of the resort and the staff that attends to them. The island paradise is surrounded by the crystal clear waters of a marine sanctuary.

Mozambique's Quirimbas Archipelago is made up of 32 tropical coral islands stretching sixty miles along the Indian Ocean coast, from Pemba to the Rovuma River. These tropical Mozambique islands are blessed with some of the richest coral reefs in the world that provide shelter to an incredible diversity of sea life. The archipelago has become known as the “African Caribbean” because of its breathtaking marine line and excellent diving, snorkelling, and fishing. The natural beauty includes mangroves, coral reefs, and palms islands.

Azura is an eco-boutique and the second luxury Indian Ocean retreat by Christopher and Stella Bettany. The distinctive African-chic style of Azura is here too, and it remains true to its mission of providing the ultimate in private luxury hideaways in stunning, undiscovered destinations. The resort is relaxed and understated, but the castaway style is deceptive as the amenities and activities here are world-class and unique.

Conscious of the necessity of preserving its pristine natural environment, Azura Quilalea has embarked on a unique energy saving project. Solar power, wind generation, rainwater harvesting, and rechargeable crystal batteries are used in combination with normal generators and desalination to provide the island’s power and water.

The resort consists of nine seafront villas built with natural coral stone and makuti thatch. All are open-plan and spacious. The decor is stylish, and the use of wood, cotton, rope, pebbles, and rattan add to the “castaway” feel. Guests can choose between three categories of villa: four Sunrise villas, four Sunset villas (offering premium locations and outdoor showers), or the exclusive cliff-top premium villa. It is even possible to book the island in its entirety!

Take some time to visit the cliff-top spa. It has signature, locally-inspired treatments including coconut shell rub-downs, head-to-toe tamarind and aloe treatments, and warm marula oil massages.

Enjoy a magical sunset cruise on a traditional sailing vessel or dhow. Experience the beauty and tranquility of the Indian Ocean in these historical vessels. Scuba diving and snorkeling at Quilalea is some of the best in the entire archipelago and is available as close as seventy feet offshore! The marine pavilion, which looks west over the Quilalea Channel, is a fully equipped PADI dive centre. Diving in these waters offers up to 100 feet of visibility, and water temperatures hover around a balmy 82 degrees. You can expect to see all coral reef species typical of the Indian Ocean region as well as game fish, manta rays, eight species of shark (most notably, whale sharks), huge schools of feeding barracuda, king fish, red snappers, green and hawksbill turtles, pods of humpback dolphins, not to mention the humpbacked whales in season.
