Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Lodge is a fifty-minute drive from Mariental in southern Namibia. The terrain may at first seem harsh, but it slows charms you until you agree that it is among the most beautiful in the world. The tall thorn trees, the red sand dunes, the game, and the intense solitude. The mixed tree and shrub savanna is broken by undulating red sand dunes running parallel to each other in a northwest to southeast direction. The valleys in between the parallel dunes are commonly referred to as “dune streets.”

The Kalahari Desert is an ancient living desert and although the word “Kalahari” means wilderness, it is much more. The native people are friendly and have been enchanted by the land for hundreds of years. The animals are hardy and unique and are adapted to live in the semi-arid conditions.

Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch has a wonderful old farmhouse as its headquarters. It houses a reception, a lounge, a dining room, and a bar/cellar. There is also a small well-stocked library with a broad selection of books relating mainly to African flora and fauna. The main dining area is a huge, enclosed porch, and the chef is on standby to provide breakfast, lunch, or dinner at request.

Bagatelle Ranch has associated with the Cheetah Conservation Fund Bagatelle as a custodian of cheetahs. It keeps cheetahs in an enclosure right next to the recreation area. These captive cheetahs can never be released into the wild and will remain in captivity for the rest of their lives.

Accommodation at the lodge is in ten chalets. Four are built of timber and raised on stilts at the top of a sand dune. The views to the southwest are incredible. The other six chalets were built using hay bales and are situated between the dunes. They have thick walls and en-suite shower facilities. All the chalets have both fans and air conditioning.

For those who prefer to erect their own “accommodation,” Bagatelle Kalahari Game Ranch has created five campsites all situated in a wide street between the red sand dunes. The campsites have an ablution block with toilet, shower, washbasin, and mirror.

The lodge has a local waterhole, and scenes from the viewing platform are a highlight of any visit, especially when the cheetah are drinking or playing. Early morning and late afternoon game drives pursue the animals when they are at their most active. Game drives also allow you to enjoy the unique dune topography. Bush walks are an excellent way of getting up close and personal with nature. There are sign posts and marked trails that allow you to hike with or without a guide. But the traditional sundowner on a red Kalahari dune is not to be missed. Watch the sunset manipulate the colors of the Kalahari.
