Desert Homestead

Desert Homestead

The Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world, barren, dry, and dangerous. It is the stuff of adventure movies and novels, thieves, shipwrecks and skeletons. Surely it should be avoided rather than visited? But the Namib Desert is one of the most fascinating places in Africa, particularly its unsurpassed beauty and vastness. It is surprising in its largeness and solitude.

Desert Homestead, 32 kilometers southeast of Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei, is a working ranch that offers accommodation. It is the perfect base from which to venture into Namib’s Sossusvlei and Naukluft on horseback. The ranch’s horses are easy to manage even with those with no experience. The camp offers one or two night “outrides.” All meals are provided and sleeping is under vast Namibian skies with the starry canopy above. This is an experience one should not miss.

From the veranda at Desert Homestead, there are breathtaking views of the Naukluft and the Tsaris and Nubib Mountains. Inside is a cosy lounge with ethnic African decoration and comfortable leather sofas. Satellite TV is available in a separate room. The camp has internet facilities in the curio shop. The swimming pool is much in demand in the warmer weather. The Homestead’s cuisine is exquisite, and most of the produce used in their preparation is grown on the farm. Meals can be taken either be in the dining room with candles and white linen or on the veranda where the views and stars are your backdrop. If you prefer to prepare your own dinner, Desert Homestead provides delicious barbecue pack for you to barbecue at your chalet.

The twenty resident chalets are comfortably and luxuriously decorated, each with its own private veranda. The chalets have large single or double beds as well as en-suite bathrooms with shower and toilet. The units are constructed to have the least impact on the area—the lights and ceiling fans use batteries which are charged with wind or solar power. The soaps, shampoo, and body lotion provided in the bathrooms are eco-friendly.

Desert Homestead offers many exciting activities. Venture into the Sossusvlei and Naukluft in an air-conditioned 4x4 vehicle or on horseback. Addition activities on horseback include a sundowner ride, departing the lodge after afternoon tea and returning in time for dinner, and a horseback breakfast ride that departs shortly after sunrise and enjoys a champagne breakfast at a scenic spot. A self-guided walking trail is clearly marked and leads to the summit of a nearby hill. The views from the top are amazing!
