Desert Horse Inn

Desert Horse Inn

Desert Horse Inn stands approximately 1,400 meters above sea level in the Aus Mountains and is known for its grand vistas of both mountains and sweeping desert plains. The lodge is situated on a 25-acre farm that borders on the Sperrgebiet, a forbidden diamond mining area.

The Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park is home to three very different biomes, resulting in a unique array of flora. After the winter rains, the Succulent Karoo form a colorful carpet of flowers that covers the seemingly endless plains of the southern Namib. The nature reserve borders on the Nama Karoo and on the dune sea of the Namib. The landscape is characterized by mountains, rock-strewn dry riverbeds, and sweeping plains.

The main area at the Desert Horse Inn is constructed of timber and houses the main reception area and curio shop on the lower floor. Telephone, fax, and internet connection are found here too. A staircase takes you upstairs to the restaurant, bar, and sitting area. An outside deck under a shaded roof allows one to enjoy the amazing views in comfort.

The bar is well-stocked with spirits and local beers and wines, and a generous fireplace draws visitors to its warmth on the cold winter nights. The lounge has comfortable sofas and armchairs, and old fashioned luggage serves as coffee tables. The floors are scattered with animal skin rugs. The use of seed pods, ostrich eggs, and other natural materials are redolent of the African safaris of old.

The main indoor restaurant has high ceilings supported by wooden beams, large windows, and offers a panoramic view (270 degrees!). Meals are served either as a buffet or from a set menu, depending on the number of guests.

Accommodation at The Desert Horse Inn is in 24 luxury rooms with spacious, en-suite bathrooms. Each room has a fridge, fan, mosquito nets, and tea/coffee station. Geisterschlucht Cabin is available for self-catering travelers in two dormitories that sleep ten persons each (six kilometers from the inn), while the Desert Horse Campsite (1.5 kilometers) has ten separate campsites.

Scenic sunset drives provide an opportunity to experience the incredible scenic beauty of Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park at dusk. Daily desert tours depart in the early morning allow guests to take in the impressive scenery of the Succulent Karoo desert. The hiking and mountain biking trails are well marked and take you through the wildly romantic scenery of the Aus.

Day trips to Lüderitz and Kolmanskop are also a favorite. Lüderitz is 120 kilometers from the inn, and the ghost town of Kolmanskop only 115 kilometers. Klein-Aus Vista is the ideal starting point for a trip to both places. Twenty kilometers from Aus, on the way to Luderitz, visit the Garub waterhole where wild horses and several other animals of the desert plains can be found. The wild horses of the Namib have roamed this harsh habitat since 1915 and are an experience one should not miss.
