Eagle's Nest Lodge

Eagle's Nest Lodge

Eagle's Nest Lodge is at the foot of the Aus Mountains in the Klein Aus Vista Nature Reserve. The lodge is situated on a 25-acre farm that borders on the Sperrgebiet, a forbidden diamond mining area. The Nest is seven kilometers (ten-minute drive) from the Klein Aus Vista main reception and restaurant complex of the Desert Horse Inn.

Accommodation at Eagle's Nest is in a small group of nine rock chalets spread out over a boulder-strewn hillside. The Boulder, Desert Vista, and The Rock chalets are among the favorites. Some are built partially from gigantic granite boulders, others are built into the actual rock walls, but all have stone floors. Each chalet has en-suite facilities (flush toilet, wash basin/shower with soap dispensers and bath towels provided), a fully equipped kitchenette, a lounge, fireplace, and a private veranda that provides wondrous views across the seemingly endless Namib Desert. The chalets have wooden furniture, a bedside table and light, and an honesty bar.

The setting is idyllic, and guests will be charmed by the vastness, solitude, and tranquility of the desert. They are beckoned to enjoy the country cuisine and vibrant atmosphere of the bar at the Desert Horse Inn. If they prefer, barbeque packs and breakfast platters can be organized for them to enjoy at Eagle’s Nest.

Photographers will find plenty of opportunity to ply their craft, not just because of the amazing scenery, but also because of the unique quality of light, the distinct flora, shy fauna, or the Namib wild horses.

Scenic sunset drives provide an opportunity to experience the incredible scenic beauty of Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park at dusk. Daily desert tours depart in the early morning allow guests to take in the impressive scenery of the Succulent Karoo desert. The hiking and mountain biking trails are well marked and take you through the wildly romantic scenery of the Aus.

Day trips to Lüderitz and Kolmanskop are also a favorite. Lüderitz is 120 kilometers from the inn, and the ghost town of Kolmanskop only 115 kilometers. Klein-Aus Vista is the ideal starting point for a trip to both places. Twenty kilometers from Aus, on the way to Luderitz, visit the Garub waterhole where wild horses and several other animals of the desert plains can be found. The wild horses of the Namib have roamed this harsh habitat since 1915 and are an experience one should not miss.
