Great Namibian Journey

Great Namibian Journey

Along with the Diverse Namibia Safari, the Great Namibian Journey provides a whirlwind tour of the breadth of Namibian ecotourism. This thirteen-day safari visits an astounding variety of Namibian sites, from Sossusvlei’s red dunes to Swakopmund on the Atlantic to the rocky desert of Damaraland to the wildlife hotbed of Etosha’s grasslands to the distinctive Skeleton Coast. This variety of locales combines to create the quintessential Namibian experience—its stark terrains, breathtaking vistas, and surprising diversity of wildlife.

Kulala Desert Lodge serves as the base camp for the first two days of the safari. In the heart of the Namib Desert, activities center around the nearby Sossusvlei, a clay pan fringed by enormous sand dunes that are famous for glowing red in the early morning light. For days three and four, from the luxurious accommodations of the internationally renowned Hansa Hotel, embark on activities emphasizing marine wildlife encounters, including a dolphin and seal cruise, oyster cultivation, and whale spotting (in the appropriate season, of course).

The next three days are spent at Desert Rhino Camp in the rocky desert of Damaraland. Most notable of the desert’s surprising concentration of wildlife are the desert elephant and black rhino, but there are also regular sightings of Hartmann’s mountain zebra, kudu, giraffe, gemsbok, and springbok. Days eight and nine take guests to the epicenter of Namibian wildlife, Etosha National Park, where permanent springs nourish the borders of the world’s largest saltpan, creating grasslands and marshes that support an incredible diversity and concentration of wildlife, from the usual plains game to their feline predators. The final destination of the journey is Namibia’s distinctive Skeleton Coast, one of the most inhospitable but hauntingly beautiful places on earth.
