Kulala Desert Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

Situated in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve just adjacent to Namib-Naukluft National Park, Kulala Desert Lodge is in prime location for exploring the magnificent sand dunes of Sossusvlei.

Kulala Desert Lodge has twenty-three thatched and canvas chalets, known as kulalas, built on raised wooden platforms. In fact, the chalets have flat roofs allowing guests the option of sleeping under a starry, African sky. There are twenty standard en suite kulalas consisting of seventeen with twin beds and three with double beds. For families and groups, there are three family kulalas available. Two of the family units come with two separate rooms with separate entrances, their own en-suite bathrooms, and a connecting deck. The remaining family kulala is a standard room with an extra bed and shared bathroom.

The camp is situated at the foot of the majestic Sossusvlei dunes making it the closet property to the iconic red dunes. It sits within the private 67,000-acre Kulala Wilderness Reserve and enjoys its own private entrance to Namib Naukluft Park. There are plenty of desert-adapted animals to be seen on the Reserve including ostrich, springbok, gemsbok, spotted hyena, and the occasional brown hyena. Some of the smaller creatures living in the desert include the bat-eared fox, black-backed jackal, porcupine, Cape fox, and aardwolf.

Activities center around the spectacular Sossusvlei dunes. With exclusive access to the Kulala Reserve, game drives follow the desert-adapted animals far from the crowds of other parks. Nature walks take a closer look at the flora and fauna with its diverse array of insects, reptiles and rodents. Take in the sweeping scenery riding electric powered fat-wheeled bikes. A fun way to traverse the spectacular open plains with your guide and explore the Sossusvlei from a different perspective. Available at extra cost is a unique ballooning safari, allowing adventures to drink in the surreal landscape from an unparalleled viewpoint. Photographers will delight in trips to the Dead Vlei, an enormous clay pan flanked by red dunes, its skeletal trees create a surreal image. There are also trips to Sesriem Canyon with its breathtaking views and geographical layers created over several million years ago.

The common area of the camp houses the lounge, dining room, and bar. The camp’s refreshing plunge pool provides a cool escape from the heat of the day. A broad wraparound veranda overlooks a waterhole that attracts local wildlife from gemsbok to jackal, providing the perfect viewpoint from which to observe and photograph.
