Okahirongo Elephant Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

One of Namibia’s most remote lodges, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge promises a wilderness safari experience like no other.

Each of the seven terra cotta suites overlooks the surrounding wilderness offering picturesque views of the rugged Purros valley, lush riverbed, and distant mountains. Earth-toned décor, dark African wood, and rough, natural surfaces echo the beauty of the surrounding landscape. Each room boasts a private lounge with a cozy daybed. A luxurious en-suite bathroom includes indoor and outdoor showers and an inviting bathtub with a view of the valley. The Presidential Suite is a sumptuous private villa with two luxury bedrooms featuring a scenic entrance, an extended lounge area with an external veranda and two gazebos, day beds, and cushions for a lazy afternoon or a star-gazing night.

Located in the Purros Conservancy just thirty-five miles from the Skeleton Coast, the lodge can only be accessed via 4×4 vehicle or small aircraft. A nearby landing strip is only five minutes away. Also known as the Kaokoveld, this area is home to the nomadic Himba tribe as well as a variety of uniquely adapted wildlife. Desert elephant, lion, black rhino, and giraffe are frequently sighted. Other wildlife species flourish in the Purros Valley, including gemsbok, springbok, and ostrich.

An open safari vehicle provides the best game viewing opportunities, and experienced guides whisk guests through a variety of untouched wilderness areas to explore the diverse plant and animal life that thrive in desert conditions. Special game drives track free-roaming desert elephants. These magnificent pachyderms can survive for days without water. Morning and afternoon game drives, night drives, morning walks, sundowners, and breakfasts in the wilderness are just some of the adventures available. Cultural visits take in Namibia’s last traditionally existing tribal group in a nearby Himba village for lessons on their rich culture and way of life.

The lodge enjoys a spectacular wrap around view. And with the beauties of the desert all around, the lodge gives ample opportunities to take in the views from the open-air lounges, the library, and the refreshing pool. Excellent meals comprised of a unique blend of Italian and Namibian cuisine are served by candlelight in the dining room or around the open fire of the traditional boma. Fresh-from-the-garden ingredients and excellent South African wines complement the daily changing menu. For even more relaxation, massage treatments are available.
