Onguma Game Reserve

Onguma Game Reserve

In the indigenous Herero language, the word onguma means “the place you will not want to leave.” Onguma is unique in that it is the only private game reserve on the eastern side of Etosha National Park, bordering on Fischer’s Pan. Visitors have the wonderful dilemma of choosing between venturing into Etosha on their own (self-drive!) or being piloted by expert guides. A little of both may in fact be the only solution!

The Onguma Collection offers four camps that cater to the breadth of travel budgets and desired safari experiences. Onguma Bush Camp is slightly simpler in style and caters for families. Onguma Tree Top is a more rustic experience with a focus on bush walks. The luxury tents of Onguma Tented Camp are perched on the banks of a popular waterhole. Etosha Aoba offers a more traditional lodge experience. And Onguma The Fort serves as the flagship establishment, boasting never-ending views across Fischer’s Pan and into the Etosha National Park. The Fort is regarded by travelers and industry leaders alike as one of the premier lodges in Namibia.

Onguma Game Reserve stretches across 34,000 hectares of protected land. Plains game such as kudu, giraffe, eland, oryx, hartebeest, zebra, and impala roam freely, and predators including lion, cheetah, and leopard are frequently sighted. The reserve even boasts its own family of Black Rhino! During the Namibian summer months, when the rains have finally come, the park becomes a birdwatcher's paradise. Over 300 bird species migrate to the wetlands and the once-dry riverbeds.

Etosha National Park is Namibia's prime wildlife destination and one of southern Africa's finest game reserves. Covering an area of more than 20,000 square kilometers, it is home to a wide variety of wildlife, plains game in particular. The game viewing is notoriously excellent as the many waterholes attract an astounding diversity and concentration of wildlife, making for outstanding photographic opportunities.
