Onguma Tented Camp

Onguma Tented Camp

Onguma Tented Camp, part of the Onguma Collection of lodges, is located in the Onguma Game Reserve. This private game reserve is nestled on the eastern boundary of the Namibia’s iconic Etosha National Park.

Onguma Game Reserve stretches across 34,000 hectares of protected land. Plains game such as kudu, giraffe, eland, oryx, hartebeest, zebra, and impala roam freely, and predators including lion, cheetah, and leopard are frequently sighted. The reserve even boasts its own family of Black Rhino! During the Namibian summer months, when the rains have finally come, the park becomes a birdwatcher's paradise. Over 300 bird species migrate to the wetlands and the once-dry riverbeds.

In the indigenous Herero language, the word onguma means “the place you won't want to leave,” and it is not difficult to see how it earned its name. This is tented luxury at its best, and its position amidst the local acacia bushes, on the edge of a waterhole, and surrounded by graceful Makalani palms is the bush at its most alluring.

Namibian designer Heidrun Diekmann (who also designed The Fort, another lodge in the Onguma Collection) was inspired by the world famous Etosha Pan. From the surrounding landscape she took a palette of colors and textures that is complementary and muted, with shades of grey, white, khaki, and beige combining with canvas, screed, pole, and stone. The outcome is a tented camp rooted firmly in the local “vernacular” yet with modern appeal.

Seven en-suite safari tents with private verandas overlook the waterhole where in the daytime graze gentle dik dik and feisty zebra, while at night lion and hyena add to the Africa symphony. You may be lucky to glimpse nocturnal porcupines venturing out for a drink.

The main tented building houses the dining room where, despite the fact that you are almost six hours from Namibia’s capital city Windhoek, the food is as good as that of a top city restaurant. The décor is retro-contemporary with deep sofas for relaxing. And when the heat is too much or you just need refreshing after day in the bush, the rim-flow pool is most inviting.

Game viewing is clearly the main attraction. Apart from the safaris on the Onguma Reserve itself, for the best big game viewing, diversity of species, and the sheer number of plains game, nothing can surpass Etosha, Namibia’s premiere wildlife hotspot.
