Sossus Dune Lodge

Sossus Dune Lodge

Sossus Dune Lodge is located in the Namib-Naukluft Park, an ecologically unique area sandwiched between two deserts, the Namib in the west and the Kalahari in the east. The lodge was built in an environmentally sensitive manner, and the structures are loosely modeled on the traditional Ovambo structures, built using a wooden frame with thatch roof and canvas sides.

Namib Naukluft National Park is in the arid southern region of Namibia that has some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the planet. The park is a vast wilderness of almost 50,000 square kilometers and contains Sossusvlei, Sesriem, the Welwitschia Trail, Sandwich Harbour, the Naukluft Mountains, and the Kuiseb Canyon. Covering an area the size of Germany, it is made up of dune fields (some of those at Sossusvlei are amongst the highest in the world), gravel plains, and rugged mountainous areas.

Sossus Dune Lodge is the first (and currently only) lodge to be built in Namib-Naukluft National Park. Sesriem Canyon within easy walking distance. The main buildings are on raised wooden decks with a reception, large open-plan restaurant, and lounge/bar areas with large sliding doors. At the swimming pool there are a few lazy-loungers, but suntan lotion is essential as it is un-shaded.

Twenty-three desert chalets with two beds and two Honeymoon suites comprise the accommodation. Each chalet has a large en-suite bathroom with hot shower, double basin, and flush toilet. The rooms are equipped with brightly-colored mosquito nets, solar powered lights, and fans. Every room is furnished with leather and dark wood furniture and suede loungers. The chalets have glass fronts which give onto fantastic views over the surrounding desert and allow for air-flow to cool the chalets.

The lodge has a restaurant, bar, souvenir shop, and swimming pool. Breakfast is served on a buffet, while dinner is served from a set menu with two choices of main course. There are both indoor and outdoor dining options.

The main attractions at Sossus Dune Lodge are Sossusvlei sunset drives, guided nature drives, guided after-dinner walks into the Namib, and hikes to the Sesriem Canyon.

Sossusvlei, with its enormous dunes up to 325 meters is one of the top destinations in Namibia. Artists and photographers just cannot get enough of the ever-changing light and shapes. Dead Pan, at the base of one of the largest dunes at Sossusvlei, is a large ghostly expanse of dried white clay, punctuated by skeletons of ancient camel-thorn trees. But when there have been good rains, the water in this “dead” pan attracts flamingos and other aquatic birds.

Namib Naukluft National Park is home to many wildlife species including Hartmann's mountain zebra, kudu, gemsbok, oryx, klipspringer, duiker, steenbok, leopard, baboon, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, African wild cat, caracal, and aardwolf. The steep cliffs of the mountains provide ideal nesting for various cliff-breeding bird species, especially black eagles.
