Namibia

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

PLAN MY TRIP

A free-spirited lodge oasis in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, Sossusvlei Desert Lodge overlooks spectacular sand dunes and stony outcroppings.

Accommodations at the lodge consist of just ten glass and stone suites spread along the curve of the escarpment for added privacy and panoramic views of the desert. Each air-conditioned suite features a split-level bedroom and living room with a cozy fireplace and is decorated in natural colors and fabrics with elements of bone, slate, and stone meant to compliment the landscape. Twiggy chandeliers, large windows, and skylights over the bed provide perfect lighting. Even the en suite bathroom is encased in glass and includes an outdoor shower for open views. A private veranda provides the ideal spot to relax and take in the unique beauties of the red dunes.

The lodge is located in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, the largest in South Africa consisting of 445, 000 acres of unspoiled desert wilderness. This area is known as Namib Sand Sea and contains the widely photographed red and orange dunes and white salt and clay pans at Sossusvlei. Many animals have adapted to this arid desert including Hartmann’s mountain zebra, kudu, gemsbok, oryx, klipspringer, duiker, steenbok, leopard, baboon, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, African wild cat, caracal, and aardwolf. Predators living here include leopard, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, Cape and bat-eared foxes, termite-eating aardwolf, and African wildcat. While more than 114 bird species can be spotted in the desert skies.

There are many activities offered at the lodge. Dune walks around the lodge, as well as to the nearby San caves, provide opportunities to enjoy the tranquility of the desert. Using already established trails, guests also enjoy quad biking adventures led by an experienced guide. Twice-daily game drives in open vehicles allow guests to track and photograph. Picnic excursions, dune drives and other scenic drives all make for a memorable safari adventure. For an additional fee, the lodge has excursions to see some of the world’s highest sand dunes, petrified dunes, and the Dead Vlei. The Dead Vlei is a dry lake surrounded by the incredible reddish sand dunes, but the combination of clear blue sky, orange-red sand dunes, white clay pan, and stark dead trees makes for a striking picture.

The main lodge area has been carefully crafted from stone and glass materials. An underground spring provides cool water for the lodge pool, and the walk-in wine cellar supplies refreshment for guests. Enjoying chef-prepared meals on the lantern-lit dining deck or at a surprise location in the dunes is a highlight of a visit to Sossusvlei Desert Lodge. At dusk, the resident astronomer teaches the lore of the stars in the modern observatory.
