Andries Stockenstrom

Andries Stockenstrom

Experience the best of Karoo Midlands hospitality at Andries Stockenstrom, an early 1800s manor house turned guesthouse and fine dining establishment. Located in the historic town of Graaf-Reinet, Andries Stockenstrom is named after one of the area’s early pioneers and is also a national monument. Gordon’s Restaurant attracts culinary experts from all over South Africa with its authentic South African fare with a twist.

The manor house itself boasts original golden wood floors, and the elegant rooms provide a relaxing retreat at day’s end. Each room offers a king=sized bed, air-conditioning, en-suite bathroom, heater, safe, tea and coffee station, and more. The deluxe Bougainvillea Suite features a spacious room with separate lounge area at the back of the house, ensuring the ultimate in privacy and comfort.

The hotel’s main feature is the relaxed but upscale Gordon’s Restaurant. Owners Gordon and Rose White have the goal of ensuring that each patron savors “slow Karoo food at its best.” Chef Gordon’s legendary cuisine begins with his own personal hunting expeditions for venison, organic Karoo lamb, wild hare, and freshly-caught rainbow trout. Free-range eggs, home-made green fig preserve, local honey, and farm chickens are incorporated into the ever-changing menu. Part of the International Slow Food Movement, Chef Gordon takes pride in his organic garden and the other fine local ingredients the compose his creative and honest four-course set menu (which changes with the seasons, of course!).

Only sixteen diners can enjoy one of Chef Gordon’s creations at a time, so reservations are at a premium. Some regulars even fly in from Johannesburg and Cape Town just to relish the signature food and dining experience provided at Gordon’s Restaurant. The restaurant has also been featured by Time Magazine, Good Taste Magazine, and television show The Global Table.

In addition to the incredible food, many other area activities and destinations entertain guests of Andries Stockenstrom, including game viewing in the nearby nature reserve (expect to see cape buffalo, kudu, black wildebeest, gemsbok, springbok, and more), outstanding museums, hiking trails in the Camdeboo National Park and Sneeuberg Mountains, the Dutch Reformed Church, the Valley of Desolation, and the nearby village of Nieu-Bethesda.
