Ant's Hill

Ant's Hill

Ant’s Nest and Ant’s Hill are privately owned lodges on adjoining game reserves in the malaria-free Waterberg region of South Africa’s Limpopo Province.

The Waterberg is unique in that it lies on an intercontinental divergence zone, and consequently the region has a wider variety of flora and fauna than elsewhere in Africa. The reserve sustains more than forty game species and well over 300 resident and migrant bird species. In the last ten years, a viable breeding herd of Sable antelope has been established here, no mean achievement given that sable is an almost entirely conservation dependent species.

Ant's Hill perches on the edge of a cliff, providing wonderful views across the reserve, its lush bush stretching out in every direction. The main house contains the living and dining areas with fireplaces in each. A large veranda and deck hang out of the gorge, and these are a popular place for breakfasts and sundowners. A heated swimming pool cascades over the edge of the cliff, creepy but wonderful. And the lodge overlooks a brilliant waterhole where many animals come to drink.

The lodge accommodates sixteen guests in two honeymoon cottages (one has a private plunge pool), one family cottage with master bedroom and two twin rooms, one two-bedroom cottage with vast living and veranda areas as well as its own plunge pool, and one twin/double room above the main lodge.

Horseback riding is one of the main activities at Ant’s Hill. The “Arab-Boerperd” horses are well-trained, making excursions safe for both children and adults. And this is a great way to see animals up close.

In addition to safaris on horseback, guided game walks have become popular in recent years. These also are an excellent way to really get into the bush and encounter its insects, birds, and animals. And then, of course, there are game drives in 4x4 vehicles. Traversing greater distances allows you to catch up with and (hopefully!) see more game.

One special highlight of a stay at Ant’s Hill is the opportunity to join the staff on game capture and relocation activities, treating injured animals, burning firebreaks, taking wildlife census on horseback, and more!

As there are so few guests at the lodge at any one time, there are no fixed itineraries, and the daily timetable is arranged with guests. The lodge is set up to give kids the experience of a lifetime. Children of all ages join their parents on all game-viewing activities. There are also specialized kids walks (endearingly named "bug" and "spoor").
