Journeys with Insight

Providing 24-hour entertainment, the thriving hippo population on the banks of the waterhole near Arathusa Safari Lodge is a highlight of any visit to this exceptional safari destination. The lodge’s location in the northern region of the wildlife-rich Sabi Sand Reserve makes it an ideal choice for travelers desiring the ultimate in luxury combined with spectacular wildlife viewing. Also adjacent to the famous Kruger National Park, Arathusa Safari Lodge is the place to enjoy one of South Africa’s brightest safari adventures.

Owners Hannes and Anina Donnhauser reside at and manage the lodge, which was formerly Anina’s private family retreat. The couple relishes sharing their unique home with guests and welcomes them as part of the family. Main areas blend seamlessly into the natural environment through the use of natural wood, thatch, and stone. Comfortable lounge area, infinity swimming pool, and traditional open-air boma provide guests with a charming environment ideal for conversation or relaxation.

Nine thatched standard rooms are beautifully decorated with natural textures, soothing neutrals, tasteful African artifacts, and comfortable yet elegant furnishings. Each standard room offers a private veranda, mini-bar, air-conditioning, mosquito net, coffee/tea station, and en-suite bathroom with bathtub and separate indoor and outdoor showers. Arathusa’s four luxury rooms are set apart from the rest of the camp, ensuring complete privacy. They feature private plunge pools and spacious lounge areas in addition to all amenities provided in the standard rooms.

Many areas of the camp overlook the waterhole, a main attraction because it is visited daily by a variety of wildlife including hippo, elephant, lion, buffalo, rhino, and more. The scarcity of other vehicles allows guests to enjoy the wildlife and panoramic landscapes in near solitude. The leopard-viewing is particularly excellent. Staff and owners routinely recognize familiar leopards, plot their movements, and observe their behavior. Other animals commonly seen are zebra, warthog, impala, and numerous bird species. And perhaps most coveted, staff reports that 90% of guests will experience the “big five” while vacationing at Arathusa Safari Lodge.
