Hluhluwe River Lodge

Hluhluwe River Lodge

On the tranquil headlands of iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Hluhluwe River Lodge astounds with its panoramic views of False Bay, the Hluhluwe river floodplain, and Lake St. Lucia. Nearby, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve is credited worldwide with bringing the white rhino population back from near extinction. From only twenty rhinos in 1900 to 10,000 today, Operation Rhino that began in the park in the 1950’s has been hugely successful, allowing the reserve to transition thousands of these spectacular animals to other protected game reserves around the world.

Hluhluwe River Lodge continues to build on the area’s fine tradition of conservation and preservation. A favorite spot at Hluhluwe’s main lodge is the spacious outdoor lounge, ideal for taking in the spectacular scenery and fresh air. Enjoy an afternoon siesta or a pre-dinner drink from the comfortable terrace chairs. Also featured at the main lodge complex are a welcoming reception area, dining room, Poacher’s Paddle Pub with sweeping terrace, and wildlife reference library filled with helpful field guides and curios.

Just a short walk from the main lodge, Hluhluwe’s two elegant honeymoon suites await. These romantic luxury chalets feature an open-floor plan and natural materials. Each spacious, thatched-roof suite also includes king-sized bed, suspended mosquito netting, air-conditioning, Victorian bath, double vanity, separate shower, and slide-away doors that reveal exquisite forest views.

All of the standard chalets are hidden in the cool, quiet forest and are readily accessed by a wooden ramp leading onto a covered wooden deck complete with comfortable chairs and coffee table. These elegant, stand-alone suites feature double glass doors, glass-fronted apex, forest views, queen-sized bed, air-conditioning, and en-suite bathroom.

Ideal for families with children, the family chalets (two are available) are specially designed for a couple traveling with two children. The open floor plan, air-conditioning, substantial luggage storage area, and large deck provide plenty of room for everyone to relax and enjoy an African adventure.

An additional self-catering option is available at a camp one mile from the main lodge. This three-bedroom accommodation offers a small private pool, braai area, kitchen with gas cooker, and more.

A relaxing stay at Hluhluwe would not be complete without several excursions into the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve. Its over 200,000 acres are home to all of Africa’s “big five” (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard, buffalo) as well as a number of other exciting species. The Hluhluwe section is known for having the highest rhino concentrations in Africa, and the iMfolozi region is popular for its exceptional lion sightings. A host of other wildlife flourishes in the area including Nile crocodile, hippo, cheetah, spotted hyena, blue wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, eland, warthog, mongoose, and hundreds of bird species.
