Jembisa Bush Home

Jembisa Bush Home

Jembisa Bush Home is a stylish lodge in malaria-free Waterberg Plateau, two hours from Johannesburg. This is a fabulous place to holiday with family and friends. However, if there is any downside here, it might be the fact that the reserve is on the small side (7,500 acres) for those guests who are looking for the full-on, on-site “out of Africa” safari experience.

Jembisa’s main building is constructed of stone and thatch. Guest accommodation is in five glorious en-suite bedrooms of which three have private balconies. Dining at Jembisa is a particular highlight, with modern dishes and visionary creations putting twists on local ingredients. Talented chefs combine excellent local produce and meat, including venison of course, with local flavors making for most enjoyable meals.

Leisure activities on offer include tennis, swimming, having a massage, or hot air ballooning over the incomparably beautiful Waterberg. Game drives across the reserve or to nearby destinations are also popular. Day and night game drives on the private reserve are led by experienced guides who will take time to explain the finer details of the bush. Nearby reserves are home to Africa’s “big 5.” Some offer elephant-back safaris and horseback riding in the bush.

Bush walks are also very popular as they provide excellent opportunities to learn about the smaller animals, the tracks the larger ones leave, and so much more. Walks will inevitably include visiting the rock painting and bushman art sites. More adventurous visitors can spend a night in the bush with only canvas between them and the “terrors of the night,” certainly much closer that what early explorers would have experienced.

The Waterberg is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve because it encompasses a wide variety of habitats and biomes, resulting in it sustaining many game and bird species.
