River Lodge on the Lion Sands Private Game Reserve is an exceptional destination, where the soul of the classic safari lives on unchanged. One of the three Lion Sands lodges, River Lodge offers twelve luxury rooms and eight superior luxury rooms, each with its own private viewing deck overlooking the Sabi River. Each thatched hideaway boasts exposed dark wooden beams contrasted with the spacious, airy room and breezy white window and bed coverings. The modern en-suite bathroom, comfortable seating area, and incredible views from inside and out complete the picture.

The quiet elegance and warm welcome of the lodge encourage relaxation, rejuvenation, and reflection. Handpicked staff provides the ultimate in hospitality and service, ensuring that guests truly feel welcomed and at home.

On the only South African reserve to offer safari experiences in both the Sabi and Sand River ecosystems, River Lodge is part of a year-round safari destination. Family-owned and managed for generations, it stands as a prime example of conservation and preservation. Due in part to sound environmental practices, wildlife is not threatened and is therefore more easily approached enjoyed by guests.

Experienced, enthusiastic, and educated guides lead twice-daily safaris by Land Rover. Due to River Lodge’s location inside the Sabi Sand Game Reserve—the larger reserve of which Lion Sands is part—and its close proximity to the iconic Kruger National Park, big game is plentiful. All of Africa’s “big five”—elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo—traverse the area. In addition, guests enjoy the opportunity to explore the region for hundreds of other magnificent animals species including hippo, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, hyena, impala, as well as many species of monkeys and birds.

In addition to the game drives, other popular activities include bush walks, bird watching, astronomy, bush breakfasts, bush dinners, hippo walks, safari lunches, wildlife lectures, and boma dinners.

Optional activities offered for an additional fee include the Chalkley treehouse experience, clay pigeon shooting, ballooning, helicopter rides, wellness treatments at the spa, local village experience, and an elephant interaction experience.
