Sheltered among lush vegetation on the banks of the winding Kariega River, Sibuya River Camp is an intimate camp, perfect for families or groups wanting to enjoy the wonders of nature together. You first meet the friendly and professional Sibuya staff at Kenton on Sea, a picturesque town equidistant from South Africa’s Port Elizabeth and East London. After introductions and a warm welcome, you embark on a half-hour boat trip up the Kariega estuary to Sibuya River Camp. Near the river’s mouth you can observe of turtles, dolphins, and whales, not to mention all the spectacular scenery.

Luxurious elevated tents with wooden floors provide a true “out of Africa” experience, while attentive staff ensure you have all the luxuries of the finest hotel. Raised wooden decks and walkways provide easy access to the public areas, river, and other tents. Amenities include king-sized (or two twin) beds, fine linens, wooden furniture, cozy rugs, and en-suite bathroom with high-quality finishes. The viewing deck and hammock are great spots to relax while watching for wildlife, taking in the spectacular landscapes, and listening to the music of this wilderness paradise.

The main lodge area features Nguni floor rugs, high thatched roof, fireplace, and comfortable lounge area. Scrumptious meals are served at individual tables in the dining room or outside in the boma.

Of course, the most popular activity by far is a game drive in an open 4x4 vehicle. These vehicles provide optimal viewing opportunities. The nearby reserve is inhabited by diverse wildlife, from the Africa’s famous “big five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) to other thrilling species including otter, cheetah, impala, kudu, springbok, giraffe, and many more.

Sibuya boasts more navigable river than any other game reserve in South Africa. As a result, it is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to nearly 400 species. Traversing ecosystems including coast, riverine forest, and savanna, chances are high that you will glimpse kingfisher, tern, gull, narina trogon, bateleur, fish eagle, nightjar, and many more throughout your visit.

Other possible excursions include river cruises, guided bush walks, beach walks, horseback riding, canoeing, golf, birdwatching, fishing, kayaking, and touring local historical sites.
