The Outpost

The Outpost

Travel to one of the most vast and remote wilderness areas in South Africa. The Outpost lies on the very edge of the iconic Kruger National Park in Makuleke Contractual Park, 100 square miles of the most biologically diverse area of the park. Lush vegetation, beautiful mountains, flowing rivers, savanna grassland, and more combine with rich concentrations of wildlife to provide incredible surprises at every turn.

Connected by a 500-meter Zimbabwean teak walkway, The Outpost’s lodge and suites are carefully situated on a hill overlooking the Luvuvhu River. Simple, modern style melds seamlessly into the surrounding landscape while professional staff provides the ultimate in luxury service. Elements of concrete and steel are warmed by colorful pillows and ottomans dressed in Nguni cowhides. Relax in the spacious lounge area, dining area, on the terrace, or around the pool.

Twelve stand-alone suites boast clean-lined, contemporary style due to concrete, steel, and state-of-the-art retractable screens. These screens open to reveal stunning 180-degree views of the valley below. On the adjoining private terrace, relax on the daybed or in the outdoor stone bathtub. Other luxury amenities include a spacious lounge, comfortable bed draped with white mosquito netting, and award-winning bathroom.

Game drives and walking safaris are the best ways to glimpse the area’s wildlife in its natural habitat, and The Outpost’s professional guides are eager to share their wealth of knowledge with guests. In winter, the region is a favorite grazing ground for elephant herds from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and elsewhere in Kruger. Hippopotamus and crocodile populations flourish at nearby Crooks Corner, where the Limpopo and Luvuvhu Rivers merge. Leopard, rhino, buffalo, lion, impala, eland, Sharpe’s grysbok, and exceptional bird species (over 350) contribute to the area’s impressive and ever-changing panorama of wildlife.

Although most guests highly recommend The Outpost’s exceptional walking safaris, be sure to take advantage of a tour of Makuleke Village as well as tours to Thulamela Ruins and Crooks Corner, a historical gathering place with a past of harboring men on the run from South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.
