Journeys with Insight

Grand old Victorian houses remind one of maiden aunts: quirky, much loved, and wonderful from a distance, but up close rickety and clearly affected by time. But it is clear that Welgelegen Boutique Hotel has none of the drawbacks of the grand Victorians but all the benefits. Beautiful architectural details, large rooms with high ceilings, and thoroughly modern plumbing and fittings are the hallmarks of Welgelegen. All these fit wonderfully in the turn-of-the-previous century house.

Welgelegen is nestled at the foot of Cape Town’s Table Mountain and is within striking distance of trendy Kloof Street and its shops, boutiques, and restaurants. It is also an easy drive to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, the cable car to the top of Table Mountain, and Cape Town’s shopping mecca, the V&A Waterfront.

Welgelegen has thirteen individually styled and well-appointed en-suite rooms featuring WiFi, air conditioning, complimentary homemade cookies and fresh fruit, and most rooms have a balcony or terrace with mountain views. The mini deluxe rooms are compact double rooms and with en-suite showers. The deluxe rooms have mid-sized double or twin beds with en-suite shower and bath. The superior rooms are more spacious double or twin rooms and come with shower and bath.

The hotel’s common areas include a spacious sitting room and library that lead to a large breakfast room. The décor in these rooms is tasteful and eclectic, and one can clearly see a talented hand at work. The breakfast room leads out to a cobbled courtyard and a plunge pool.

An in-house therapy room offers the weary traveler many treatments, ranging from pedicures to deep tissue massages. The flight recovery package has your therapist offering a detoxifying massage, lymph treatment, reflexology, and body buffing with their own secret range of oils and salts.
