White Elephant Camp

White Elephant Camp

Savor all that an authentic South African safari has to offer at magical White Elephant Bush Camp. Located at the base of the spectacular Lebombo Mountains, White Elephant also borders sparkling Lake Jozini. Relax as you experience intimate moments with nature through face-to-face encounters with its smallest as well as its most grand creatures on the spectacular Pongola Game Reserve in Northern Zululand.

Emphasizing simplicity, comfort, and privacy, White Elephant Camp offers seven generously-sized chalets. Each one is a thatched retreat, complete with ceiling fans, crisp bed linens, mosquito nets, en-suite bathroom, private veranda, and panoramic views. The largest chalet is ideal for families, offering two comfortable bedrooms with a spot for an additional bed.

The camp’s main facilities include a well-equipped, open-plan kitchen, perfect for self-catering. Also available at the main area are a swimming pool, dining area, upstairs lounge, and viewing deck.

A malaria-free reserve, Pongola Game Reserve is the native habitat of four of Africa’s “big five”: buffalo, elephant, rhino, and leopard. An abundance of other exciting wildlife flourishes in the area, including hyena giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, a dozen antelope species, and over 350 stunning bird species.

The best way to experience the diverse wildlife on the reserve is to take part in one (or two!) of the daily game drives. Offered in the early morning and late afternoon, the drives are led by qualified guides and trackers. Open vehicles allow for optimal game viewing, and White Elephant’s knowledgeable guides delight in sharing details about the surrounding landscapes as well as introducing you to the magnificent creatures that Pongola has to offer.

A boating cruise on Lake Jozini is another wilderness adventure awaiting guests at White Elephant. Sightings of fish eagle, hippo, and a variety of fish and birds are thrilling and frequent.

Other popular area excursions include flyfishing, walking with the rhino, “elephanting,” flying with Zululand Mission Air Transport, and visiting local villages, businesses, schools, and an orphanage called the Ubombo Children’s Care Village.
