236 Hurumzi

236 Hurumzi

Gaze across the cityscape of Zanzibar's Stone Town at the Tower Top Restaurant, an extraordinary eating venue atop the well-known hotel 236 Hurumzi. Set among ornate minarets, temple towers, and church spires, 236 Hurumzi is the town’s second tallest building and offers an accommodation experience unlike any other in Tanzania.

Original Zanzibari antiques from varied periods lend a romantic Arabian atmosphere. Once the home of one of the richest men in the Swahili empire, the hotel continues the tradition with fine furnishings, airy rooms, high ceilings, carved doors, original stucco décor, and hand-painted glass lamps and window panes. The furniture in the hotel is a collection of various styles found in Zanzibar from its colonial heyday in the 1800’s and beyond.

Each of the 24 guestrooms offers an en-suite bathroom and comfortable antique Zanzibari bed draped in romantic gauze fabric. Ten main house rooms offer incredible features and lead to the recently added western wing, known as the Peace of Love Wing, 236 Hurumzi’s most luxurious suites. Shared kitchen facilities are on offer at neighboring 240 Hurumzi, which includes six well-furnished guestrooms.

At the Tower Top Restaurant, enjoy the feeling of a magic carpet ride while dining atop cushions and carpets Zanzibari-style. Western-style seating with table and chairs is also available, but be sure to make reservations for this ever-popular culinary destination. An elaborate fixed-price dinner menu features Swahili-Arabic flavors and encompasses home-made appetizers, delicious soup, choice of Indian Ocean seafood salad or fatoush salad, choice of fish, beef, chicken, or vegetarian entrée, market fresh vegetables, and choice of tropical fruit salad or the pastry chef’s home baked delicacy of the day. Weekend evenings are especially memorable, with traditional dancers and music.

Numerous tours are available to visitors of the bustling town of Zanzibar, and 236 Hurumzi is glad to assist in recommendations and booking. Whether choosing to take the Kizimkazi Tour of a mosque, one of the earliest colonial settlements in East Africa, or tracing the Zanzibari spice trade on the “Grave Island & Slaves and Spices Tour,” guests are sure to learn something new. Other popular adventures include a trip to the Mkokotoni village of Tumbatu, a Prison Island Tour, a Jozani Forest Tour (featuring the Red Colobus monkeys), and walking tours of Stone Town.
