Chole Mjini Lodge

Chole Mjini Lodge

Hunt for overgrown ruins, explore a lost jungle city, or sleep in an exotic treehouse at Chole Mjini, an adventurer’s dream come true. Discover the rugged beauty of a castaway fantasy and a return to life’s simple luxuries at this one-of-a-kind safari destination. Chole Mjini lies on Chole Island, a tiny tropical paradise part of the virtually unspoiled Mafia archipelago off of the Tanzanian coast.

Taste a delicate explosion of flavor in each Swahili-inspired meal, filled with flavorful spices, coconut milk, freshly caught fish, and island-grown vegetables. Favorites such as papaya lemon soup and roasted vegetable salad have guests begging for more of Chef Anne’s specialties. Enjoy memorable food and refreshing drinks from the rooftop bar, at the candlelit tables under the stars, in the middle of the 19th-century ruins, or along the ocean.

Seven painstakingly handcrafted treehouses provide repose at day’s end. Private, yet open to the elements, each treehouse features king-sized bed, locally crafted furniture, thatched roof, second level (to accommodate children), and incredible sea views. A private bathing area is located below the treehouse in a private “garden” and offers piping hot water from the open-air shower.

Accompanied by the lodge’s experienced PADI dive master and other members of the lodge’s experienced dive crew, explore some of the most unspoiled reefs in the world. Over 400 unbleached coral species flourish in the reefs of Mafia Island Marine Park. Expert training is available to novices, and dives are tailored to the aptitude and comfort level of each guest. Both new and experienced divers relish the abundance of marine life, from microscopic invertebrates to giant groupers, turtles, mantas, and Moorish idols.

Sea-based activities abound at Cholo Mjini, with snorkeling, swimming with whale sharks, watching turtles hatch, sunbathing, and sunset sailing as guest favorites. For land excursions, visit Popo Park (a conservation area for fruit bats), Juani Island with its medieval ruins and hidden saltwater pool, and nearby Chole Village.
