Gibbs Farm

Gibbs Farm

Savor a cup of freshly roasted organic coffee in your cozy retreat as you awaken from sleep at historic Gibbs Farm, the oldest guest house in northern Tanzania. The farm’s peaceful surroundings are a calming end to an exciting day on safari throughout Tanzania’s thrilling Great Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Forest. Jacaranda trees provide a shady retreat above your own private veranda overlooking verdant forests, gardens, and fields.

Built in the 1920’s as a coffee farm and given a new life as a warm, rustic, and luxurious inn, Gibbs Farm is a charming step back in time. The main farmhouse includes original wooden beams, colorful African artwork, and views of the farm’s organic vegetable and terraced flower gardens.

Seventeen guest cottages are the ultimate in elegance, with eucalyptus floors, hand-crafted furniture, two queen-sized beds, indoor and outdoor showers, fireplace, and private veranda with panoramic views. For groups traveling together, a larger cottage with a common living area flanked by two en-suite bathrooms is an ideal choice.

A true farm-to-table experience awaits guests of Gibbs Farm. Regionally raised animals provide organic meat, and garden-fresh produce combines with English and Tanzanian influences under Chef de Cuisine Lisa Campbell’s sure hand. From the farm’s on-site coffee plants, amazing brews and teas are offered at a daily afternoon tea alongside fresh milk, cream, and scones from the farm’s deli and bakery. If you wish, take part in the everyday rituals of bread making, vegetable harvesting, and coffee roasting.

Explore the rich traditions of East African life with a bicycle trip along the back roads of Karatu, a visit to a local Iraqw family, or an adventure into centuries old waterfalls and elephant caves.

Nature-lovers relish the diversity and beauty in the surrounding Ngorongoro Conservation Area. With a team of devoted naturalists to guide you, discover over 200 bird species, myriads of native plants, and diverse wildlife including bush baby, baboon, and savanna elephant. Nearby, Lake Manyara National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater deliver a safari adventurer’s dream come true: lion, hippo, hyena, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, and more in amazing numbers. The crater itself is known to contain a stunning 30,000 animals, all flourishing in this carefully protected region.
