Kambi Ya Tembo

Kambi Ya Tembo

Revealing stunning views of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru, Ol Doinyo Longido, and the Amboseli Plains, Kambi Ya Tembo is an integral part of Tanganyika Wilderness Camps. This unique destination borders both the country of Kenya and Amboseli National Park but is part of a private concession, ensuring seclusion and a one-of-a-kind safari experience. In addition to showcasing some of the largest elephants in East Africa, the area is also home to Maasai people with little exposure to outside influences.

Savor delectable meals while looking over the flood plains of Amboseli to Mount Kilimanjaro. From the expansive open-air deck or around a blazing campfire, mealtime is a memorable experience.

Each of the fourteen private canvas tents features a luxurious king-sized bed or two comfortable twin beds. Sweeping views, traditional makuti thatched roof, African décor, writing desk, en-suite bathroom with build-in shower, and private veranda ensure that your “home away from home” provides a relaxing retreat. Several rooms also offer three beds, ideal for families traveling together.

Unforgettable wildlife encounters await guests of Kambi Ya Tembo, particularly with the impressive local elephant population. Game drives led by experienced guides in 4x4 vehicles track these magnificent creatures so that guests can experience them at close range in their natural habitat. Huge elephant bulls, some over fifty years old, sport massive tusks and travel with herds of mothers and calves. Most of these elephants have been carefully monitored by Cynthia Moss for over 25 years and are reported to be one of the most healthy and balanced elephant populations on the continent.

Another memorable encounter is for guests to meet some of the local Maasai families. Guests learn about the traditional Maasai way of life during a village visit, even participating in spectacular ancient ceremonies.

Hiking in Kilimanjaro Park, taking part in a sundowner “sunset celebration” with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, and enjoying a safari walk escorted by a Maasai warrior are just a few of the other thrilling experiences that make a stay at Kambi Ya Tembo absolutely unforgettable.
