Journeys with Insight

In an area so remote that it requires its own airstrip in order to comfortably transport guests, Sanctuary Kusini in Tanzania’s southern Serengeti National Park region offers an exceptional safari experience. Extensive research done by guides and local experts helped determine the most spectacular location for this special camp. They handpicked this area on a rocky outcrop overlooking the expansive plains below and inhabited by magnificent wildlife. Directly in the path of the great wildebeest migration, Kusini offers guests an ideal vantage point for this incredible spectacle and as well as year round wildlife viewing.

Kusini is the only permanent camp in this secluded area of the Serengeti, but it offers fabulous amenities. Dining area, lounge, library, and campfire provide opportunities to relax and converse, and the expansive deck allows for sensational views, stargazing, and sundowners. All meals are included, as well as afternoon tea. Guests can enjoy their lunches in the Serengeti if desired and can request private bush dinners and sundowners.

Twelve spacious canvas tents on permanent structures provide a relaxing end to an exciting day on safari. Shaded by acacia trees, each luxury tent boasts en-suite bathroom with indoor shower, romantically draped beds, expansive private deck, and personal attendant.

Morning and afternoon game drives provide the best opportunities to view wildlife, and experienced guides and trackers lead the safaris in customized safari vehicles. The area immediately around the camp is particularly known for its lion, leopard, cheetah, and rhino populations, but many other animals frequent the region including klipspringer, zebra, wild dog, hyena, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, and, of course, wildebeest.

Many exciting activities await guests of Sanctuary Kusini. Calving season is an especially exciting time. A “cosmic safari” introduces guests to the beauty of the African sky with the help of a laser. The Serengeti Cheetah Project allows guests to contribute to ongoing cheetah monitoring by tracking, photographing, and recording the animals’ location and behavior. In addition, a seasonal hot air balloon safari is available for an additional cost.
