Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge

Taking its creative inspiration from nearby prehistoric site Olduvai Gorge, the aura of Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is one of ancient beauty and overlooks one of the most spectacular sights in Africa: the Ngorongoro Crater. Known as the largest and most perfect volcanic crater on earth, Ngorongoro is home to over 25,000 large mammals. Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge blends entirely into the landscape and is virtually invisible from the crater floor some 600 feet below. Local river stone, indigenous vines, arched stone passages, timbered decks, and flaming torches illuminating stylized prehistoric cave paintings open to reveal spectacular views of the unfolding wildlife drama in the distance.

Blazing in the central dining room and bar area, a fire burns constantly. Buffet-style breakfasts and lunches give guests a wide variety of international choices, and dinners feature locally-sourced fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products. Bush dining is also popular, and staff is happy to accommodate requests for outdoor dining in several picturesque locations around the lodge.

Rock-built rooms number 75 and are strung around the crater rim. Each room features its own private rock-enclosed balcony, brass lamps, embossed leather headboard, wildwood mirror, Maasai carvings, and stylized prehistoric cave paintings. The deluxe Kimba Suite offers spacious accommodation with sitting room, king-size bed, dressing area, natural stone en-suite bathroom, and fully stock mini-bar.

Situated within northern Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains about 100 miles west of Arusha is the Ngorongoro Crater. Created when an ancient volcano erupted and then collapsed upon itself, the crater is now carpeted with expansive grasslands dotted by a few acacia. The natural enclosure is home to impressive varieties and concentrations of wildlife. In addition to the zebra, gazelle, and wildebeest that graze the plains, the region is home to all of Africa’s “big five” mammals: lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino, and elephant. The uniqueness of the crater’s topography and the accessibility of its wildlife make it a prime tourist destination in northern Tanzania.

In addition to the daily game drives, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge offers guided nature walks, bird walks, circle hike, Maasai dance, acrobatic shows, board games, crater lectures, wildlife movies, gift shop, babysitting, and conference room facilities.
