Shangazi House

Shangazi House

Shangazi House is about half an hour from Arusha, the capital city of the Arusha Region of Tanzania, and a premiere jumping off point for many safaris into the Serengeti.

Accommodation consists of two spacious en-suite bedrooms in the neo-colonial main house (these rooms are adjoining and may be opened to inter-lead should families require it), and four one-bedroom cottages. All these are set amidst ten acres of mature gardens. The spacious cottages have large double beds, a sitting area, en suite bathrooms, and verandas with views over the garden and beyond.

The main house is where everyone meets to enjoy the lounge, pool, bar, and veranda. The colonial architecture makes for cool, welcoming rooms, with polished floors, high ceilings and Persian carpets. It is no surprise therefore to learn that Shangazi House was built as a private residence by renowned guide Mr. George Mavroudis, and that Lela, his sister, runs Shangazi House as a superb establishment with Afro-European cuisine. Cypriot family influences are evident in the meals and garden grown vegetables. The emphasis on organic produce, the preference for local where possible, and wines sourced from France and South Africa make for a unique dining experience.

As Shangazi House is no more than a ten-minute drive from Arusha National Park, which is a splendid mix of mountains and lakes. The park’s wildlife is prolific and diverse. The house staff can arrange park visits in their game-viewing vehicles, and sightings could include elephant, giraffe, hippo, zebra, bushbuck, and leopard, not to mention the excellent birding.

Trips to Arusha as well as visits to nearby villages and tribal markets round off the experience. Hiking and canoeing are also possible, and staff will arrange these activities with fully trained guides.

As Shangazi is situated between Kilimanjaro International Airport and the town of Arusha, it is the ideal place to start or end a holiday in Tanzania. When starting a holiday, tourists can use Shangazi as their home base for accessing any number of places, including Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro crater. At the end of a holiday, Shangazi House allows you to catch your breath, repose oneself, and enjoy good food and rest, before flying back home.
