Baines' River Camp

Baines' River Camp

“If you only visit two continents in your lifetime, visit Africa—twice,” famously quotes R. Elliott. And you will be inclined to agree after a visit to an authentic, colonial-style safari camp on the lower Zambezi. Baines’ River Camp is in the heart of Zambia, “the real Africa,” and near Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools World Heritage Site. Unforgettable panoramas, raw wilderness, abundant wildlife, and generous people help to make this destination part of an extraordinary safari experience.

Named for the famous artist and explorer, Thomas Baines, Baines’ River Camp is the ideal choice for honeymoons, family vacations, and corporate getaways. An elegant yet homelike atmosphere welcomes guests from the first refreshing drink to the personalized farewell. In the main lodge area each evening, enjoy the outdoor boma-style fireplace, drinks at the Selous Bar, and unspoiled views of the Zambezi River. Pamper yourself with a wellness treatment in your suite or on your private veranda or take a dip in the camp’s relaxing pool.

Eight classic Explorer Suites offer the latest amenities and either a single king or two twin beds. Enjoy a commanding view of the Zambezi River from your comfortably furnished veranda before spending your first night in a bed dressed in rich, classical fabrics, cotton percale linen, and pure down pillows and duvets. Each airy suite also features natural hardwood timbers, colorful kelims, leather, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, complimentary mini-bar with coffee and tea making facilities, personal safe, and en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower, double sinks, spacious dressing area, and more.

The camp operates three Land Cruisers, four motorized aluminum boats, and four canoes, each designed to explore the surrounding area from a unique perspective. River cruises with one of Baines’ experienced guides is sure to include sightings of elephant, buffalo, elusive African skimmer, and many more. Canoe safaris and angling offer an even more intimate view of the Zambezi, with guests enjoying fishing for African tiger fish, barble, bream, chessa, Cornish Jack, nkupe, and vundu.

Of course, a game drive is a spellbinding adventure, full of opportunities to view the best of Africa’s teeming wildlife. Vast concentrations of lion, buffalo, and numerous other bird and mammal species flourish in Lower Zambezi National Park and adjacent Chiawa Partnership Park.

Baines’ River Camp and its staff are delighted to welcome internationally recognized experts to host photographic workshops, fly fishing clinics, elephant studies, and birding weeks, designed to share their passion for Africa with each guest.
