Busanga Bush Camp

PLAN MY TRIP

Nestled on a tree island of sycamore fig trees in the lion-heavy Busanga Plains, Busanga Bush Camp is an intimate and comfortable safari camp.

Accommodations at the camp consist of just four well-appointed canvas tents. The tents come with two twin beds that can be pushed together to make a double. The en suite bathrooms came with porcelain sinks, a flush toilet, and a shower. A shaded veranda fitted with canvas chairs is the perfect spot to relax and take in the sweeping views of the plains. Other amenities include bathrobes, slippers, and an in-room safe.

The Busanga plains are the lush jewel of Zambia’s Kafue National Park and are renowned for their fertile grasslands that attract incredible concentrations of wildlife. Flooded each year by the Lufupa River, a tributary of the Kafue River, the grasslands support herds of plains game from sitatunga to impala to zebra. Not surprisingly, these grazers attract impressive numbers of predators including cheetah and wild dogs. In fact, Busanga is famous for its productive prides of lions. Other animals living here include puku, red lechwe, buffalo, and wildebeest as well as large pods of hippos in the channel. Bird lovers can enjoy some of the 491-species found here, including the endemic Chaplin’s barbet.

Daily game drives explore the plains in 4×4 vehicles and the expertise of a knowledgeable tracker and guide. This is the best way to see the famous lions of Kafue. Night drives take a look at the nightly activities of such nocturnal creatures as genet, civet, owls and occasionally the elusive leopard. Guided bush walks take a closer look at the flora and fauna. For guests who stay for three nights or more, a complimentary hot air balloon safari provides an aerial view of the plains and animals below and ends with a delicious champagne breakfast. Dependent on the water levels, boat excursions discover the wonders of the channels and their wildlife. Special birding safaris are led by an expert with the hopes of spotting some of the rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers, herons, large flocks of storks, and other bird species.

The lounge and bar area are housed under their own open canvas tents with an uninterrupted view over the plains. The dining room is situated a little further back under the shade of a large tree from which an unusual lantern chandelier hangs. Most meals are served outdoors. Busanga Bush Camp is open seasonally between June 1st and October 31st each year.
