Journeys with Insight

Nkwali Camp is another in the Robin Pope stable of destinations in Zambia, and this one is located on his private land overlooking South Luangwa National Park. This is superb game viewing country with beautiful ebony woodland and open grasslands. There is much to see here, and sightings at the camp itself (including leopard, lion, and occasionally wild dog) are often as good as that of the park. The area is particularly good for elephants and the endemic Thornicroft’s giraffe.

Nkwali Camp offers six brick and thatch chalets, each one spacious and offering great views of the Luangwa River. The chalets have high ceilings and stone floors for maximum coolness in the heat. The fronts are open to allow guests to animal watch while relaxing, but there are gates to protect from unwanted animal visitors. The en-suite bathrooms have showers that are open to the skies during the dry season.

The main building perches on the banks of the Luangwa, and the bar area is constructed around a large ebony tree and has amazing views of the river and the park. The open deck is great for game viewing and romantic moonlit dinners. While there is a simple thatched dining room, most meals are served under the trees, at the river, on the deck, or in the bush.

Nkwali is open all year. There are two main seasons in this part of Africa, the "dry season" (mid-May through October) and the "Emerald Season." However, this is Africa, and every day will produce something spectacular.

As far as meals at Nkwali, the day will often begin with a light breakfast buffet next to the campfire. Most days, guests will enjoy a large brunch after returning from the morning’s activities. Dinner may be under a starry sky or in the thatched dining area overlooking the camp's waterhole. Roasts cooked to perfection with generous helpings of vegetables and followed by a delicious desert are sure to please everyone.

Game drives into the heart of South Luangwa take place twice a day. Nkwali has first-rate guides, most fully-qualified to lead walking safaris as well as game drives. The park even allows night drives and some off-roading. These factors make for a superb wildlife experience in one of Africa's best game areas. Walking safaris were pioneered in the Luangwa River valley, and Nkwali is the base camp for some of the region’s premiere treks. The Luangwa’s birding is spectacular, and Nkwali is in a superb location, overlooking the Luangwa River, to take advantage of this.
